The epidemiological bulletin of Colombia, prematurity is the biggest cause of death between 2008 and 2018 with a higher risk of newborns under 1500 grams or intrauterine growth restriction. In its fresh state, cannabis contains tetrahydrocannabinolic acid, which later converts into THC, its main psychoactive compound. Although THC is the most prominent, cannabis includes over 500 components and at least 113 cannabinoids. The legality of cannabis remains controversial due to risks such as dependency. Medicinal marijuana is indicated for treating pain, controlling nausea and vomiting, and stimulating appetite. Its legal use varies by country, with authorization for conditions like multiple sclerosis, Crohn’s disease, inflammatory bowel disease, and epilepsy. According to the American Pain Society, cannabis treatment should follow protocols similar to opioid management, with clear guidelines and risk monitoring. Despite its long-standing presence, cannabis continues to spark debate. This study, based on a quantitative, comparative, descriptive, and cross-sectional approach, aims to balance its risks and benefits, emphasizing its therapeutic potential and the importance of humanized care in clinical practice.
