Item Análisis comparativo del tratamiento percutáneo vs cirugía convencional de la insuficiencia mitral: Estado del arte(Universidad Santiago de Cali, 2023) Castillo Marmolejo, Nicole Andrea; Leyton Erazo, Maryi Tatiana; López López, María NelaIntroduction: The most common valvular disorders affecting the structure of the heart is mitral insufficiency (MI), which is defined by backflow of blood from the left ventricle into the left atrium during ventricular contraction caused by damage to the valve leaflets. For this reason, two major groups can be described according to their etiology: primary mitral valve disease (PMV) and secondary mitral valve disease (SMV). Objective. To compare percutaneous MitraClip® vs surgical treatment of MI (1). Materials and Methods. A state of the art review was performed using databases: SAGE JOURNALS, ScienceDirect and Taylor&Francis Online, articles published between 2017 and 2022. Results. The benefits of MV repair by conventional technique allow greater success if the intervention is early, and percutaneous repair is safe, effective and feasible in patients considered inoperable, providing improved long-term quality of life. However, these treatments are not free of complications, the most frequent in conventional surgery being postoperative pain and prolonged hospitalization times, and the MitraClip® device, despite being a minimally invasive procedure, presents detachment of the clip and stroke. Conclusions. Currently, MI has proven to be the most common valvular heart disease in the aging population, due to the comorbidities that are present. This valvulopathy is attracting increasing interest in the medical community, based on current evidence percutaneous and conventional MV repair techniques offer a treatment alternative depending on anatomical criteriaItem Análisis de la evolución en pacientes con sinusitis crónica y el impacto en la calidad de vida postoperatoria: Una revisión bibliográfica(Universidad Santiago de Cali, 2024) Valencia Ceron, Stephania; Ortiz Londoño, Geraldine; Parra Castillo, Liseth; Maldonado Rincon, Beatriz AlejandraChronic sinusitis is an inflammation of the mucosa lining the paranasal sinuses, causing bothersome symptoms such as nasal obstruction, loss of smell, and facial discomfort, significantly affecting quality of life. Although initial treatments include nasal irrigation, antibiotics, and corticosteroids, some patients continue to experience persistent symptoms, leading to consideration of endoscopic sinus surgery (ESS). The methodology of this research involved an exhaustive search in different databases such as Google Scholar, yielding a total of 26 articles, 10 from PubMed, 1 from Sage Journals, 4 from Science Direct, and 8 from Springer, thus providing a wide variety of perspectives and studies for analysis. ESS stands out as the primary treatment for chronic sinusitis, aiming to improve ventilation and mucociliary clearance of the paranasal sinuses, offering a quicker and less painful recovery than other methods. However, studies show that disease recurrence is common, underscoring the need for long-term follow-up strategies and revision surgeries. Despite these challenges, ESS has demonstrated significant improvements in patients' quality of life, supported by ample scientific evidence. Evaluation tools such as the SNOT-22 questionnaire are crucial for objectively measuring surgery outcomes and understanding the disease's impact on daily life. In conclusion, ESS represents a significant advancement in chronic sinusitis management, providing patients with the opportunity to enhance their well-being and quality of lifeItem Análisis de la oportunidad quirúrgica de los estudiantes en la práctica quirúrgica III y IV del programa de instrumentación quirúrgica de la Universidad Santiago de Cali en la ciudad de Cali para el año 2019-A(Universidad Santiago de Cali, 2019) Loaiza Arias, Luís Gerónimo; Palacios Vásquez, Valeria; Henao Castillo, Luis Fernando; Puerta Díaz, Daniel EduardoItem Análisis de los avances más recientes en nanotecnología y su aplicación en ingeniería de tejidos: Una revisión bibliográfica(Universidad Santiago de Cali, 2024) Contreras Tovar, Allisson Andrea; Chamorro Valencia, Luz Daniela; Gordon Irua, Edwin Adrián; Segura Castillo, Linda NeriethIntroduction: Nanotechnology is the study and manipulation of matter at the nanometer scale, i.e., in the range of 1 to 100 nanometers. This, by means of equipment and sterilizing agents, such as, for example, steam, which is described as widely used, as a result of its low cost and high benefit, is in great demand (1). In this sense, for health institutions, the costs incurred in this process are important (1). Therefore, the ABC costing system, understood as the activity-based costing system, is adjusted to define the processes and costs of steam sterilization (7). Objective: To analyze the costs of the steam sterilization process in a private clinic in the city of Cali, 2022. Methodology: For this research, a quantitative approach study was carried out; in addition, it is research with a non-experimental, cross-sectional-retrospective design (11). Results: Two pieces of equipment with different operating characteristics, described as Essen and Baumer, were identified; and it was determined that the cost of the steam sterilization cycle in Baumer is $49,821, as opposed to the cost of the Essen sterilizer cycle, which is $17,268: The cost components may vary due to different institutional protocols and suppliers, including the difference in the type of autoclave and its operation. Conclusions: The cost components may vary due to different institutional protocols and suppliers, including the difference in the type of autoclave and its operationItem Análisis de los diferentes recubrimientos antimicrobianos innovadores, para la prevención de infecciones en implantes óseos. Revisión bibliográfica(2024) Sánchez Moncayo, Angie Bridgeth; Murillo Betancur, Camila; López López, María NelaIntroduction: Considering bone abnormalities due to trauma or genetics, it has been necessary to innovate with new ways to improve prostheses and orthopedic implants, adding antimicrobial characteristics to prevent implant-associated infections (IAI). Objective: To analyze the different types of innovative antimicrobial coatings for the prevention of infections in bone implants. Materials and methods: A bibliographic review of antimicrobial coatings in bone implants was performed. Information was collected in a tracking matrix, in various languages, including English and Portuguese. 57 articles were reviewed, of which 44 were selected, from databases such as Science Direct, PubMed and Web of Science. Results: Materials such as magnesium, nanostructured silver, antibiotics and titanium nitride were compared, each with antimicrobial properties and specific characteristics that make them suitable for different surgical contexts. Magnesium demonstrated an excellent method of action for corrosion avoiding bacterial biofilm creations. Antibiotics: Of 315 patients treated, only six patients had deep preprosthetic infection or osteomyelitis, which were treated with oral or intravenous drugs, two patients required nail replacement. Nanostructured silver excelled in areas of high risk of infection and low mechanical load, while titanium nitride was ideal in areas of greater load. The results underline the importance of customizing coatings according to patient needs and type of intervention, in addition to highlighting the potential of non-antibiotic antimicrobial alternatives to combat bacterial resistance. Conclusion: We conclude that antimicrobial coatings represent a promising way to reduce postoperative complications and prolong implant life, however, additional clinical studies are recommended to confirm their long-term safety and efficacy, consolidating their application in orthopedic and reconstructive surgical environmentsItem Análisis de los factores de riesgo determinantes en el fracaso de los trasplantes de médula ósea en pacientes pediátricos: una revisión bibliográfica(Universidad Santiago de Cali, 2024) Miranda Pérez, Katalina; Castañeda,Karen Liseth; Segura Castillo, Linda NegriethIntroduction: Bone marrow transplantation in pediatric patients is a complex procedure that involves significant risks, such as severe infections, bleeding and anemia, which may even endanger the patient's life. In this context, research into the health sector's hazardous waste management as a central issue is of great importance because of the effects this type of waste has on people and the environment. The objectives addressed in this research are therefore to identify, determine and describe the practices of hazardous waste management and effects presented by the selected research on the proposed topic published in the temporality 2010-2020. Inside the this document there develops a documentary review that tackles a methodology with qualitative approach and of type descriptive, that allowed to analyze the articles about last decade regarding the topic of study and which investigation phases were the investigation of topic, analysis of articles and results and conclusions. Finally, the review points out that waste management practices in the health sector focus on an optimal, comprehensive waste management process, starting from collection, transport and storage, but this should be done by standardizing the entire process through a manual that will expose the right techniques for waste collection phases. It is also clear that the effects that this type of waste can generate are the spread of disease vectors, as well as the deterioration of biodiversity, biological contamination of soil, water and air, and the creation of biological risk factors. Therefore, it is considered of great relevance to create or update the regulations or regulations of waste management where the whole 14 process that involves the collection, transport and storage of hazardous wastes of health entities is precisely established and thus, to cultivate and train all personnel who are in contact with this type of waste.Item Análisis regulatorio del reuso y reprocesamiento de dispositivos médicos: Una revisión bibliográfica(Universidad Santiago de Cali, 2024) Polania Tafur, Michell Julieth; Valenzuela Pascumal, Edita Linybeth; Segura Castillo, Linda NeirethIntroduction: The reuse and reprocessing of medical devices (MD) in Colombia is a high demand practice, however, this process involves risks to patient safety and does not have a fully identified regulation, which is why this review is carried out. bibliography with the aim of analyzing the reuse of MD from a regulatory perspective to guarantee patient safety and sustainability of resources. Materials and methods: The current bibliographic review was carried out by means of a search of articles in databases such as: Google Scholar repository (36), Pubmed (11), Scielo (7), ScienceDirect (7), ResearchGate (2), Springer (3), Dialnet (1). Results: The PEEK graft can have high benefits thanks to the fact that it is an implant made of polymers, which provides strength and safety similar to human tissue; in addition, it does not conduct energy and is well tolerated by tissues (11,14). However, among the advantages and disadvantages of the PEEK implant and the titanium mesh, these are very similar; however, the PEEK implant has to be a more resistant and biocompatible material compared to the mesh, although both are personalized implants, slightly light and radiotransparent (21-25). On the other hand, PEEK implants can have different post-surgical results with good success rates, since it is considered that it does not usually present serious complications that put the result itself at risk (30-34). Conclusion: cranioplasty with PEEK grafts is considered a valuable option that can significantly improve the quality of life of patients, allowing the restoration of the structural, functional and esthetic integrity of the skullItem Comparación de abordajes quirúrgicos para tumores colorrectales: cirugía laparoscópica versus procedimientos convencionales. Una revisión bibliográfica(Universidad Santiago de Cali, 2024) Gómez Mathieu, Josué Nicolas; Rosero Salverri, Yisel Carolina; Zamora, Danna ValentinaIntroduction: Colorectal cancer is a type of cancer that affects the colon and rectum. It originates when cells in these areas begin to grow uncontrollably and form tumors. For the treatment of this pathology, the surgical approach is a crucial strategy that is carried out through an incision designed to expose organs or anatomical structures. (1) In contrast, for the treatment of colorectal tumors there are two basic approaches, the conventional approach and the laparoscopic approach, which have various advantages for patient recovery. (2) Thus, the objective of this review is to compare surgical approaches for colorectal tumors, specifically laparoscopic surgery and conventional procedures. Materials and methods: A search for digital information on colorectal surgery and its approaches was carried out in Google Scholar, Pubmed and Scopus, subsequently the data obtained was compiled, including a total of 62 articles, of which 56 were added to the bibliography. Results: The comparison between the laparoscopic and conventional approach presents a greater number of advantages in the laparoscopic approach. Among these advantages is; lower mortality rate, shorter recovery time and fewer complications. Conclusion: Laparoscopic surgery is currently the most used technique for the treatment of colorectal tumors. This procedure has advantages for patient recovery. However, the conventional technique is important as a reintervention resourceItem Comparación del uso de la membrana amniótica frente al autoinjerto de conjuntiva en cirugía ocular: Revisión bibliográfica(Universidad Santiago de Cali, 2024) Cuellar Urrutia, Laura Camila; Palomino Suarez, Nicolle Dahyan; Valencia Becerra, Evelyn; Segura Castillo, Linda NeriethIntroduction: Pterygium, also known as "surfer's eye", is a benign lesion characterized by an abnormal fibrovascular growth taking a triangular or wing shape, composed of an epithelium and loose subepithelial connective tissue, limbal and conjunctival tissue largely vascularized. Objective: To compare the use of amniotic membrane versus conjunctival autograft in pterygium resection surgery, based on results of clinical cases. Materials and methods: A search was performed based on studies taken from the following databases accompanied by the respective number of articles used in the tracking matrix, starting with Pubmed (28), Web of Science (17), Google Scholar (11), ScienceDirect (8), Scopus (8), Dialnet (4), Nature (2), Taylor & Francis Group (1) and Springer Link (1). Results: Studies have shown that the combination of MA with antifibrotic agents such as mitomycin C can reduce the recurrence rate to 10-15%, approaching the results obtained with conjunctival autograft, but the use of MA alone can lead to higher recurrence rates; this has generated an interest in optimizing fixation techniques and adjuvant treatments to improve long-term clinical results. Conclusion: Both techniques have been shown to be effective in reducing pterygium recurrence; however, conjunctival autograft is distinguished by its ability to offer a lower long-term recurrence rate; this finding reinforces the relevance of selecting the most appropriate surgical technique based on the characteristics of the pterygium and the particularities of each patient.
