This was a quantitative, descriptive, non-experimental and cross-sectional study. The unit of analysis was adolescents 16 and 17 years of age, with a higher proportion of adolescents in grades 10 and 11. The sample was probabilistic through simple random sampling. The sample was calculated based on the study "Determination of sample size" by Fernández (1996), which established a confidence level of 95% (Z=95%=1.96), margin of error of 5%, proportion of individuals to participate in the study (p=50%), proportion of individuals who do not have the characteristics to be included (q=1-p). When the respective calculation was made, we obtained a sample of 84 young people, from these 84 people the results were observed. Result: Aspects of identification of mental disorders were evaluated, the questions were: Do you have a family history of mental illness? 92% said no, do you have a history of diagnosis of mental illness? 98% said no. Psychological distress issues were assessed, some of the questions were: do you have frequent headaches? 72% said no; do I sleep badly? 67% said no; do you have difficulty in making decisions? 68% said no; have I lost interest in things? 67% said no. Conclusion: According to the results, it was possible to identify the risk of mental disorders in adolescents, showing that most of them are not at risk of suffering them; however, there is a low percentage that indicates that this risk does exist. As for the results to determine psychological distress, it does not allow us to visualize concretely whether the entire study population is at risk of developing it or not, however, there are some answers that have significant percentages of more than 28%, which are: severe headaches; bad sleep; difficulty in making decisions; loss of interest in things; these are aspects of interest that should be individualized to delve into their causes; motives or reasons. It is necessary to recognize that adolescence is a unique and formative stage, which includes physical, emotional and social changes, making them vulnerable to mental health problems. Hence the importance of protecting them from adversity, promoting socio-emotional learning and psychological well-being.
