Abordaje fonoaudiológico en pacientes oncológicos

Cancer is a condition that generates abnormal cell growth, which can develop due to changes in the genetic material called mutations (1). These mutations can develop over months or years, causing cancer-related events to appear in a specific area or migrate systemically to other areas of the body, causing metastasis and increasing the risk of loss of function or even death. The types of cancer related to the alteration of the stomatognathic functions and to the phonoaudiological work are classified in a topographic way, such as the larynx and underlying parts of the oral cavity, which corresponds or is part of the category of head and neck cancer. In such a way, the immersion of the professional in speech therapy pathologist within an oncological context is very recent and little recognized, there is no consensus of the work that this professional performs in patients with cancer or post treatment, and the need from his work, in this sense, in this section, it is directed to the characterization of the participation of the professional in speech therapy as a member of the whole clinical team working in the full and holistic care of people diagnosed with cancer.
