Item Riesgos y estrategias de prevención en el uso de la máquina de circulación extracorpórea en cirugías cardíacas: Una revisión bibliográfica(Universidad Santiago de Cali, 2024) García Otalvaro, Evelin; Guzmán Valencia, Edith Andrea; López López, María Nela (Directora)Introduction: Extracorporeal circulation (ECC), also known as cardiopulmonary bypass (CPB), is a technique used in cardiovascular surgery to maintain systemic perfusion and oxygenation of the body while the heart and lungs are at rest. Objective: To analyze the risks and prevention strategies in the use of extracorporeal circulation machines. Materials and Methods: A bibliographic review of academic databases such as Google Scholar, PubMed, ScienceDirect, Springer and Taylor & Francis was carried out, using specific terms in English and Spanish. Likewise, selection criteria were established to choose the most appropriate documents for the review. After applying these criteria, out of a total of 109 articles obtained, 48 relevant articles were selected for the review. Results: The findings indicate that the most common complications associated with CPB include pulmonary, renal and neurological dysfunction, many of which are a consequence of the inflammatory response provoked by the contact of blood with the extracorporeal circuit. Education and training of medical personnel, especially perfusionists, was identified as a critical factor in the safe management of CPB. In addition, it was noted that the implementation of safety protocols and good practice guidelines can contribute to risk reduction. Conclusions: CPB is an essential tool in modern cardiac surgery, but its use requires a rigorous approach to risk management. Investment in continuous training, implementation of safety protocols and research on new technologies are essential to improve clinical practice and optimize patient outcomes.
