Mechanical ventilation is an invasive or non-invasive therapeutic procedure that can partially or totally replace respiratory function; it is carried out by means of ventilators and its management should always be performed by specialized personnel. It can be defined as a physical method that uses a mechanical device for the artificial support of ventilation and oxygenation, when the respiratory system is insufficient. This book chapter aims to mention the basic principles of mechanical ventilation in a detailed and understandable way for undergraduate students
