Abstract
This review article analyzes the benefits and challenges faced by e-commerce adoption in small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) in South America within the current digital context. The main objective is to analyze and identify how e-commerce adoption contributes to the competitiveness, market expansion, and growth of these companies, as well as the factors that hinder its effective implementation. The methodology used consisted of a systematic literature review of scientific articles published between 2021 and 2025, obtained from well-recognized databases such as ScienceDirect and Scopus, using inclusion criteria focused on recent and relevant studies applied to the South American region. The findings show that e-commerce has become a key tool for the digital transformation of SMEs, facilitating access to new markets and improving logistics and commercial processes. However, significant barriers were also identified, such as the lack of technological infrastructure, insufficient business training, regulatory challenges, and inequalities in access to digital resources. The COVID-19 pandemic played a crucial role as a catalyst for digitalization but also highlighted existing structural differences between countries and companies. It is concluded that although e-commerce represents a significant opportunity for South American SMEs, its full adoption requires active public policies, access to financing, and strengthening of digital business capabilities. This article contributes to the academic and practical discussion on the impact of e-commerce on SMEs and emphasizes the need for strategic interventions to overcome the identified challenges.
