Abstract
Concerns about the environmental impact of synthetic dyes are driving the textile industry to seek more sustainable alternatives. Pigments produced by fungi have attracted significant interest due to their renewable origins, biodegradability, and ability to produce compounds with additional functional properties. However, the range of fungal species with potential for natural dye production is highly fragmented, making it difficult to conduct a comprehensive analysis and select the most promising microorganisms for industrial applications. This systematic review was conducted to analyze the available scientific evidence and identify which fungi in the industry have the greatest potential as producers of natural dyes for the textile industry. To this end, we employed the PRISMA 2020 methodology through a literature search in the Scopus, Web of Science, and ScienceDirect databases. Forty-two scientific articles were selected based on the inclusion and exclusion criteria. We found that genera such as Talaromyces, Monascus, Penicillium, and Chlorociboria exhibit notable pigments with different shades and functional properties, including antimicrobial activity, antioxidant activity, and UV protection. We also found that agro-industrial waste can be used as culture substrates to increase sustainability and reduce production costs. Finding solutions for pigment stability, mycotoxin production in certain species, and industrial-scale production remains a challenge. We conclude that fungal pigments offer a promising alternative for the development of sustainable dyes in the textile industry and can also be further developed within the textile sector. However, further research is needed to optimize production processes and biosafety, as well as the application of fungal pigments on an industrial scale.
Description
datos Scopus, Web of Science y ScienceDirect. Se seleccionaron 42 artículos científicos como resultado de
los criterios de inclusión y exclusión.
