El Gaming: ¿Aliado o enemigo del estilo de vida en los jóvenes? Una crítica reflexiva
(Universidad Santiago de Cali, 2025) Jojoa López, Juan José; Rivera Hurtado, Ferney (Director)
The lives of today's young people are torn between the allure of screens and the need for an active lifestyle. Technology, although a powerful tool for growth, can become a setback if not used wisely. The digital age offers remarkable innovations, such as home exercise apps and "digitalized sport," where young people combine gaming with physical routines, monitoring their activity and sharing progress online. However, the other side of the coin reveals significant risks. Many young people focus exclusively on gaming, leading a very sedentary lifestyle that leads to physical and mental health problems. Extreme sedentary behavior leads to obesity and poor posture, and video game addiction leads to isolation and mental decline. Furthermore, the accelerated pace of platforms like TikTok can shorten attention spans, making traditional sports less appealing, and screen exposure affects sleep. In fact, 68% of young gamers don't get enough physical activity. The real challenge is teaching them to discern between what's beneficial and what's harmful, balancing screen time with outdoor activities. Schools have a golden opportunity to integrate programs that blend technology, sports, and digital health. Technology isn't inherently bad; its impact depends on how we use it. It's about helping young people find their own balance, so that technology is a traveling companion toward a fulfilling life, not the final destination.

The reflective article presented in this paper addressed sedentary lifestyles and their impact on the overall health of older adults, taking into account the physical, cognitive, emotional, functional, and social dimensions. The objective of this article was to examine how a sedentary lifestyle deteriorated the quality of life of older adults, diminishing their autonomy, well-being, and social participation. To inform this reflection, a literature review was conducted to determine how sedentary lifestyles led to loss of muscle strength, inability to move, memory impairment, feelings of anxiety, depression, and isolation. It was evident that physical inactivity intensified dependency rates and reduced self-esteem, negatively affecting overall functionality. Similarly, it was emphasized that the situation deteriorated during the COVID-19 pandemic, given the confinement and the reduction in exercise spaces. It was highlighted that movement is key to the physical and mental health of older adults. The proposal was to promote public policies, community strategies, and a cultural shift that would highlight the value of active bodies during old age. This is not just a health recommendation; it is a social and ethical responsibility for a population that can still maintain its independence. The conclusion was reached that sedentary lifestyle stemmed not only from age but also from lifestyle, which makes it imperative to further promote physical activity as a cornerstone of active aging.

(Universidad Santiago de Cali, 2024) Grueso Ibarguen, David Santiago; González Candelo, Jhon Alexander; Ruiz Caicedo, Jadilson; Rivera Hurtado, Ferney (Director)
The use of psychoactive substances in sports, such as stimulants, anabolic steroids and recreational drugs, has generated much controversy due to their effects on athletes' performance and health. Although they can offer short-term benefits, such as increased muscle mass and better concentration, their prolonged use can cause serious damage to vital organs, cardiovascular problems, hormonal alterations, addiction and mental health problems. Thus, the aim is to describe the impact of this type of substances on high-performance athletes. From an ethical point of view, they are considered a form of cheating and go against the spirit of fair competition, resulting in sanctions and damage to the athlete's reputation. Historically, doping has roots in ancient Greece and Rome, and its regulation has evolved significantly, especially since the 20th century with the creation of anti-doping tests and the founding of the World Anti-Doping Agency (WADA). Despite advances in the detection and fight against doping, it remains a challenge due to sophisticated doping techniques. The fight continues to focus on protecting the health of athletes, ensuring fairness in competition and preserving the integrity of sport. Concluding the use of psychoactive substances in sport poses serious ethical and health dilemmas. While they may provide temporary benefits such as increased performance and enhanced concentration, their prolonged use carries significant risks to the physical and mental health of athletes.
