Abstract
Necrotizing enterocolitis (NEC) is one of the main complications that can affect preterm infants, characterized by inflammation and necrosis of the intestine. Given its high mortality and the risk of serious sequelae, nursing care is essential to improve the chances of recovery and prevent complications. This paper examines the main areas of care in preterm infants with NEC, focusing on feeding, weight gain, and postoperative needs. These aspects are essential in nursing intervention to promote the development of premature infants, optimize their nutritional status and prepare them for a stable evolution in the hospital environment and later at home. This pathology affects 5-7% of preterm newborns and with very low birth weight, less than 1,500 grams. If the weight is less than 1,000 grams, the incidence increases to 14%. About 90% of affected patients are less than 34 weeks of gestation. There fore, it represents one of the main causes of mortality in this age group, with a rate of 30-40%4,5.

La enterocolitis necrotizante (ECN) es una enfermedad gastrointestinal grave que afecta principalmente a los recién nacidos prematuros. Caracterizada por la inflamación y la necrosis del intestino, la ECN puede llevar a la perforación intestinal y sepsis, lo que pone en riesgo la vida del infante. La incidencia de la ECN es mayor en los bebés con bajo peso al nacer y aquellos que han recibido alimentación enteral temprana. La ECN no tiene una etiología exacta, pero existen factores que influyen como la inmadurez intestinal, la infección, la hipoxia, y la alimentación enteral pueden contribuir a su desarrollo. Los síntomas comunes son distensión abdominal, vómitos biliosos, sangre en las heces y letargo. El diagnóstico se basa en la presentación clínica, imágenes radiográficas y análisis de laboratorio.
