Abstract
The growing interest in natural ingredients in cosmetics has driven the search for plant-based alternatives with multiple biological activities. Coffee and rosemary stand out for their rich phytochemical composition and broad spectrum of beneficial properties for skin and hair. Therefore, a systematic review was conducted using the PRISMA methodology to synthesize the scientific evidence on the biological activities and cosmetic applications of both species. In-vitro, in-vivo, ex-vivo, and clinical studies were included, evaluating antioxidant, anti-inflammatory, photoprotective, anti-aging, hair-protective, and antimicrobial activity.
The results showed that both plants share a phytochemical profile rich in polyphenols with complementary mechanisms. Coffee stood out for stimulating collagen synthesis, acting as a passive photoprotector through caffeine and chlorogenic acid, and modulating NF-κB and AP-1. Rosemary stood out for its multifactorial anti-aging action with simultaneous inhibition of elastase, collagenase, and hyaluronidase, its favorable safety profile, its formulation versatility, and its superior antimicrobial activity and clinical evidence in acne and alopecia.
The combination of both showed antimicrobial synergy and complementary mechanisms affecting inflammation, oxidative stress, and MMP inhibition. It was concluded that coffee and rosemary possess high and complementary cosmetic potential for formulating anti-aging, anti-hair loss, anti-cellulite, antimicrobial, and photoprotective products. However, phytochemical variability, the narrow safety margin of coffee, and differences in technological stability limit its application.
