dc.description.abstract | Introduction: The pelvic floor (PP) is a structure of muscles, and connective tissue in charge of organ suspension and sexual function. Its dysfunction can lead to urinary incontinence and erectile dysfunction. In men, stress urinary incontinence usually occurs after surgery, they may experience only sporadic loss of a small amount of urine, possibly brief, while others may experience a constant and prolonged loss. Erectile dysfunction is the inability of a man to achieve or maintain a firm erection for sexual intercourse, which is an ongoing problem; such PP dysfunction can cause stress, affect self-confidence, and contribute to problems in sexual intercourse. Objective: To analyze the information available in different databases on physiotherapeutic management with electrotherapy and therapeutic exercise for the control of erectile dysfunction and urinary incontinence. Methods: In order to carry out this review, scientific articles providing information on erectile dysfunction, physiotherapeutic exercise for the management of erectile dysfunction, and electrotherapy in the management of erectile dysfunction were taken into account. A search is made in databases such as: Springer, Science Direct, urinary incontinence in men, therapeutic exercise for urinary incontinence in men and electrotherapy for the treatment of urinary incontinence in men. Medline Plus, PubMed and the portal for the diffusion of Hispanic scientific production showed that most of the physiotherapeutic interventions for erectile dysfunction are in patients with post-prostatectomy, a medical procedure used for the management of patients with prostate cancer that leaves severe urinary incontinence and erectile dysfunction as a sequel. Among the studies analyzed, it was found that the most commonly used physiotherapeutic treatments are: Kegel exercises, Biofeedback training and electrostimulation. Discussion and results: In the data collection, a total of 327 articles were obtained and for the management of the information and discussion, 9 of them were chosen as they provided the required and complete information to respond to the proposed objectives of the degree work. In terms of effectiveness, both modalities show a mutual relationship for the treatment of erectile dysfunction and urinary incontinence and demonstrate that positive results are obtained by combining them. In the articles there is a wide range of results that support electrotherapy for the early management of these pathologies and prior to prostatectomy. Similarly, a biofeedback exercise program is recommended to minimize problems after surgery. Conclusion: During the review of the databases it was found that a large part of the articles focused on the rehabilitation of radical prostatectomy and that these articles were aimed at the combination of electrotherapy and pelvic floor muscle training Finally, the usefulness of physiotherapeutic intervention to solve pelvic floor problems in both men and women can be observed. This subject still has a long way to go and there is evidence of articles that are still in development that can possibly inform us more in the future about the indications, protocols and recommendations for the dosage of exercises and short wave therapies.
