Item Prevalencia y factores asociados al consumo de productos tabáquicos en adolescentes escolarizados de Candelaria Valle 2019.(Universidad Santiago de Cali, 2020) Ojeda, Juliana; Morales Galeano , Jennifer; Casaran, Manuel FelipeTobacco product consumption is a global public health issue affecting both men and women, with serious consequences for the respiratory and cardiovascular systems, cancer risk, and environmental health. A 2019 quantitative, descriptive, cross-sectional study was conducted in Candelaria, Valle, to determine the prevalence and associated factors of tobacco use—including cigarettes, water pipes (hookah), and electronic cigarettes—among secondary school adolescents aged 11 to 19 from three local schools. Most participants were 14 years old, and 61.6% were female. The prevalence of hookah use was 0.91%, mainly among students aged 11, 16, and 17. Notably, 16.4% believed tobacco use leads to weight loss, 46.12% had received information about tobacco in school subjects, and 49% reported receiving it in the year prior to the study. Additionally, 77.6% said their parents discussed tobacco-related topics with them. The study concludes that tobacco use among adolescents is shaped by a range of risk and predisposing factors, highlighting the need for deeper understanding of this social phenomenon through both empirical data and theoretical perspectives.
