Mental health plays a fundamental role in the promotion and maintenance of healthy lifestyles, allowing clear and reflexive decisions regarding all the activities that an individual carries out for his or her wellbeing. Through art therapy, exercises are strengthened to form autonomous communities with the capacity to resolve their self-care. Materials and methods: Study with qualitative approach, phenomenological design, which seeks to unveil individual and/or collective meanings to experiences lived in relation to art therapy and mental health, of seventh high school students of a school in the city of Cali. A semi-structured interview was used to gather these experiences through focus groups. The analysis was carried out according to the phases proposed by Miles and Huberman (data reduction, descriptive analysis and interpretation; four categories of analysis emerged according to the model or disciplinary reference of Nola Pender (Health Promotion). Results: exercises focused on self-efficacy and positive expectations in front of the art workshops are evidenced, expressions of perception of benefits as well as barriers that were later resolved in the schoolchildren emerge, interpersonal and group support emerges in the development of art therapy and finally, self-concept and other forms of personal development expressed by the children. Conclusions: Art therapy opens a world of possibilities for personal expression, creativity and exploration of identities; implementing it as an educational strategy to promote mental health in schoolchildren has shown positive results in self-recognition, stimulation of thinking and learning. It highlights the collaborative and interdisciplinary work (nursing and art professional) where assertive communication is facilitated, encourages empathy, promotes collaboration among group members, contributes to the creation of safe environments where schoolchildren develop greater confidence by exploring their thoughts and emotions through art therapy. It became evident that artistic activities are essential to promote mental wellbeing, so it is necessary to develop these practices from the educational and institutional environment
