Item ¿Qué español enseñar? Lengua e identidad cultural en la enseñanza de ELE(Universidad Santiago de Cali, 2025) Avirama Cartagena, Catalina; Restrepo Bonell, Lina Susana (Directora)This article reflects on the teaching of Spanish as a foreign language (ELE) from a cultural, critical, and identity-aware perspective. Its objective is to explore the benefits of language teaching in the construction of the cultural identity of students who learn Spanish, recognizing that teaching a language also means teaching a way of inhabiting the world. Through the development of three main ideas—language as a vehicle for identity, ELE teaching as a space for cultural encounter, and identity within ELE instruction—the article argues that language should not be taught as a closed system nor from a single variant, but as a living, diverse, and deeply human tool. It is proposed that the ELE classroom can become a space for intercultural dialogue, where the teacher’s role goes beyond technical instruction and becomes a mediation of meaning and culture. It is also affirmed that learning a new language can lead to processes of identity reconstruction and personal transformation. Finally, it concludes that all varieties of Spanish are valid, as long as they are taught with respect, contextual awareness, and openness to diversity. From this perspective, teaching a language is not just about delivering content, but about accompanying students in the search for their own voice within the language.
