The habit of digital suction occurs more frequently in children and this is considered normal up to a certain age and must be interrupted since if it is prolonged it will cause alterations in the stomatognathic system, generating an imbalance in the dental, muscular and skeletal structures, thus increasing the possibility of developing disorders in the temporomandibular joint (TMJ). Temporomandibular disorders (TMD) correspond to a series of intraarticular, periarticular, systemic and muscular alterations. It has been multifactorial etiology established, including systemic, functional, structural, physiological, hereditary and psychosocial factors. A bibliographic search of 56 articles in Spanish and English was carried out, of which 12 were chosen based on inclusion and exclusion criteria, which concluded that one of the etiologies of TMD may be the presence of parafunctions that are found more frequently since early age, in this case the habit of digital suction, showing that it produces alterations at the dental, muscular and bone level, these alterations being the triggers.
