Since the agreement between Colombia and the European Union entered into force, there were many expectations about the growth of the tropical subsector, especially about the growth of the exports and employment generation. However, six years after the implementation of the agreement, it is still difficult to establish what has been its development in the Valle del Cauca region. For this reason, this research work, using the review of available literature for the subject of study, analyzes the level of exploitation of the FTA with the European Union presented by the Valle del Cauca department with its production of tropical fruits. It is concluded that the agreement truly is a big opportunity for the department, but due to various factors that limit companies, it has not fully taken advantage of the FTA.
