This condition represents a major public health problem, especially in children under five years of age, ranking among the leading causes of mortality worldwide and among the top three in this demographic group. To address these complications and reduce morbidity and mortality in children, the World Health Organization (WHO) and the United Nations Children's Fund (UNICEF) implemented the Integrated Management Strategy for Childhood Illnesses (IMCI) in 1996.
