Item Factores desencadenantes de la neumonía asociada a ventilación mecánica en pacientes adultos en unidad de cuidados intensivos: revisión de alcance(Universidad Santiago de Cali, 2024) Sanchez Ramirez, Danna Isabella; Zapata Ramírez, Derli Sofia; Ortega Peña, Jhonatan Estiven; Murillo Ríos, Saray (Directora)Introduction: Ventilator-associated pneumonia (VAP) is an infection of the lung parenchyma that occurs in patients undergoing invasive mechanical ventilation (IMV) for a minimum of 48 hours (1). This type of pneumonia is commonly caused by viruses or bacteria. In addition, IMV represents a considerable risk factor for the development of VAPV, as it interferes with the body's natural barriers, such as mucociliary functions of the airways (2). This is a matter of concern in intensive care units (ICU) since it negatively affects the clinical prognosis of patients. This means, a serious problem that requires constant care and attention to ensure their stability (3). In these cases, a trained medical team equipped with advanced technology is necessary to adequately monitor and treat patients. An incidence rate ranging from 5% to 50% has been reported, with a comparable associated mortality and an increased length of hospital stay of 4 to 13 days (4).
