A quantitative study conducted in Palmira, Valle, assessed the risk of mental disorders in 85 students from grades 10 and 11 (ages 16 to 18) at an educational institution. The descriptive, cross-sectional research did not find a high risk of mental disorders or psychological distress in the majority of the youth surveyed. However, even though most students did not report a family history or a diagnosis of mental illness, the study did identify a small percentage that is at risk. Additionally, it was observed that more than 28% of the participants reported symptoms of psychological distress, such as frequent headaches, poor sleep, difficulty making decisions, and a loss of interest in things. The research concluded that while the overall risk is low, these symptoms warrant individual attention to determine their causes. It highlights the vulnerability of adolescents to mental health issues due to the natural changes of their age and emphasizes the importance of protecting them and promoting their emotional well-being.
