Item Principales usos de la terapia génica en el tratamiento de diversas enfermedades: Una revisión bibliográfica(Universidad Santiago de Cali, 2024) Obando Castiblanco, Natalia; Tovar Pazmiño, Natalia; Riascos Sinisterra, Anette Dayana; Segura Castillo, Linda Nerieth (Directora)Introduction: Gene therapy (GT) is a medical technique that involves the introduction, modification, or replacement of genetic material into cells of the body to treat disease. This innovative approach is based on the idea of correcting or replacing defective genes responsible for inherited or acquired diseases. Aim: To know about the main uses of gene therapy in the treatment of various diseases. Materials and methods: A review of the literature published between 2019- 2024 was conducted, using the ScienceDirect and Springer databases, and the Google Scholar repository. Some terms used for the search were “gene therapy”, “epilepsy”, “advances in epilepsy treatment”, among others. A total of 143 articles were obtained, of which 41 met the inclusion criteria and were used in this review. Results: GT has demonstrated good levels of success and promising results in the treatment of conditions such as hemophilia and some neurological disorders, among others; therefore, various forms of GT have been developed, such as the use of CRISPR or adeno-associated virus vectors, which aim to achieve effective delivery of GT, however, there are still challenges to be resolved regarding this form of therapy, especially ethical and social, as well as economic. Conclusions: GT has emerged as a revolutionary tool in the treatment of a wide range of genetic diseases. With a focus on efficacy, safety and personalization of treatments, GT continues to open new perspectives for the treatment of various diseases.
