Item Efectos neurotóxicos y seguridad del consumo de ayahuasca: revisión y análisis de casos: una revisión sistemática(Universidad Santiago de Cali, 2025-12-11) Pineda Quintero, Erika AlexandraThis paper addresses the potential neurotoxic effects and safety of ayahuasca, an ancestral beverage with psychoactive properties due to its N,N-dimethyltryptamine (DMT) content, traditionally used in Amazonian ritual contexts. In recent decades, its use has expanded to urban and therapeutic settings, raising concerns about the lack of regulation and clear scientific evidence regarding its neurological risks, especially outside the Indigenous community. The objective was to analyze the safety of ayahuasca consumption through a systematic review of the scientific literature and the analysis of reported clinical cases, in order to identify potential risks and conditions for safe use. The methodology was based on the search and analysis of studies published between 2019 and 2025, compiled in scientific databases such as Scopus, Scielo, ScienceDirect, Taylor & Francis, Pudmed Google Scholar, UNODC, and peer-reviewed scientific journals such as Frontiers and VHL, focusing on clinical research and reports of neurological adverse effects. The results showed that, although ayahuasca showed therapeutic benefits in controlled contexts, such as the reduction of depressive and anxiolytic symptoms, adverse effects such as serotonin syndrome, general malaise, persistent hallucinations, and cognitive impairments were also reported, especially in association with recreational or unsupervised use. It was concluded that the safety of ayahuasca consumption depends on multiple factors such as dose, frequency, the patient's health status, and the context in which it is administered. The need to update regulatory frameworks and conduct broader clinical studies to define guidelines for responsible use, minimizing risks, and seeking broader therapeutic applications is highlighted.
