Item Glutaraldehyde-based desensitizer does not influence postoperative sensitivity and clinical performance of posterior restorations: A 24-month randomized clinical trial(Elsevier Inc., 2023-10) Hanzen, Taíse Alessandra; de Paula, Alexandra Mara; Grokoski, Eduardo; de Oliveira, Isabelle Lins Macêdo; Arana-Gordillo, Luis Alfonso; de Melo Monteiro, Gabriela Queiroz; Perdigão, Jorge; Loguercio, Alessandro D.Objectives: To evaluate the influence of a glutaraldehyde-based desensitizer (GL) on postoperative sensitivity (POS) in posterior bulk-fill resin composite restorations using an adhesive applied in the self-etch (SE) and etchand-rinse (ER) strategies; and to assess the clinical performance of the restorations. Methods: Posterior resin composite restorations (n = 228) at least 3 mm deep were inserted in 57 subjects using a split-mouth design. The adhesive was applied with/without prior application of a GL. A resin composite was used for all restorations. Spontaneous POS (risk and intensity), as well as POS caused by stimulation with an air blast and assess the response to horizontal and vertical percussion was assessed using two scales in the baseline and after 7, 14, and 30 days. In addition, some parameters were evaluated using FDI criteria up to 24 months of clinical service. Results: No significant POS was observed (p > 0.05). A higher absolute risk and intensity of spontaneous POS was observed within 7 days (35.1%), without statistically significant differences among groups. At 24 months 5 restorations were considered clinically unsatisfactory, and 73 restorations showed minor discrepancies in adaptation, with no significant differences between groups (p > 0.05). Significance: A GL agent does not influence POS in posterior restorations with bulk-fill resin composite. It may be considered a dispensable clinical step in the restorative protocol.Item Optimizing phosphoric acid etching times across different formulations: Impact on dentin structure, roughness, and adhesive performance after 4 years(Elsevier Inc., 2025-07) de Souza, Julian; Ñaupari-Villasante, Romina; Hass, Viviane; Arana Gordillo, Luis Alfonso; Gutiérrez, Mario Felipe; Gomes, Giovana Mongruel; Loguercio, Alessandro D.; Gomes, João CarlosObjective To evaluate the effect of etching times with commercial phosphoric acids on the demineralization pattern, dentin roughness, chemical mapping, nanoleakage (NL), and resin-dentin microtensile bond strength (μTBS) when used with an etch-and-rinse adhesive, assessed immediately and after 4 years of water storage. Methods Four commercial phosphoric acids were tested: Ultra-etch [ULE, 35 %], Scotchbond Universal Etchant [SUE, 32 %]; Dentsply Dental Conditioner [DDC, 37 %] and Total Etch [TTE, 37 %]. Occlusal dentin from 188 molars was etched for 3 and 15 seconds. Demineralization patterns were observed via SEM, roughness was measured using optical profilometry, and chemical mapping was obtained through micro-Raman spectroscopy. Resin-dentin bonded beams were prepared for NL and µTBS testing at baseline and after 4 years of water storage. Data were statistically evaluated with three-way ANOVA and Tukey’s test (α = 0.05). Results After 15-second etching, ULE exhibited significantly less demineralization compared to DDC and TTE, while SUE had an intermediate effect (p = 0.001). No differences were observed among groups after 3-second etching (p > 0.05). ULE and SUE showed lower tubular density than DDC and TTE (p = 0.001). Roughness and chemical mapping indicated lower demineralization at 3 seconds for all groups (p < 0.002), except ULE, which showed similar at both 3 and 15 seconds (p > 0.05). NL and μTBS values were higher for ULE and SUE, regardless of etching times and aging period (p < 0.05). ULE demonstrated the best control over demineralization, followed by SUE, both enhancing resin-dentin bonding performance.
