Chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) is a preventable pulmonary disorder characterized by airflow limitation due to airway alterations caused by exposure to harmful particles or gases and producing persistent respiratory symptoms; It is currently considered the fourth leading cause of death worldwide. Inhalation or inhaled therapy is the basis of COPD treatment; One of its main advantages is the direct release of the drug at the site of action, requiring lower doses and favoring a faster onset of action, as well as reducing systemic adverse effects. In accordance with the above, this research project is proposed that corresponds to the macroproject initiated in a private IPS in Santiago de Cali, and which aims to evaluate the inhalation therapy technique in patients with a clinical diagnosis of Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease (COPD) , through the application of a survey and verification of a checklist during the use of the inhalation therapy technique in hospitalized patients at the San Juan de Dios hospital in Cali in the 2019 period. To carry out the study, data from 60 hospitalized patients at the San Juan de Dios hospital in Cali with a clinical diagnosis of Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease (COPD), corresponding to the universe of the sample, were analyzed. According to the inhalation therapy technique, we found that 73% of the patients surveyed applied the technique in an acceptable manner, followed by 17% inadequate technique and only the remaining 10% adequate technique. Regarding the device, 100% of the patients surveyed used a metered dose inhaler and 63% of the patients included in the study used inhalocamara, while 37% did not use it.

For chronic lung diseases the inhaled pathway is part of the maintenance treatment and also of rescue in the exacerbations asthma and Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease (COPD). Proper use of this treatment will allow good control of the pathology, but reports have been found showing that 75% of COPD patients’ regular exacerbations of their symptoms that tend to increase progressively in frequency and intensity, constituting one of the determinants of the poor quality of life of these patients. This research is aimed at analysis on the use of inhalotherapy, implemented by respiratory therapy students, physiotherapist, and medicine and nursing who take the last semester of a University Institution in the city of Cali. The proposed research was conducted through a descriptive cross-sectional design, where knowledge of inhalotherapy by the study population was established at a specific point in time. The population under study was made up of students from the medical programs, Respiratory therapy, Nursing and Physiotherapy of the last semesters, 18 years of age enrolled in the 2020 A academic period. Within the results was found the participation of students in the academic respiratory therapy program with 72%, Nursing with 18%, Physiotherapy with 7% and finally Medicine 3%, the type of inhaler students knows most is the 97% metered dose inhaler and only 29.2% of the population have perfect handling of inhalers. In conclusion, it was evident that there is knowledge about some aspects that may be satisfactory but that it should be necessary to include them in the academic training processes of future health professionals, so that patients can benefit from these acquired skills.
