The main objective of companies in this increasingly competitive environment is to ensure an efficient manufacturing performance, so it became essential to have a plant layout design planning, i.e., the physical arrangement of the elements that constitute a company, which significantly influences the production performance from the point of view of cost and time. In this paper is detailed a review of the implementation of simulation models in the process of plant layout design, as a tool that allows the early detection of errors and problems by providing different solution alternatives. The importance of the implementation of simulation models in such process has been reviewed from the finding of 26 sources extracted through a descriptive methodology, where research studies published between 2016 and 2021 from different authors and countries are considered. This article has as its main contribution bibliographic evidence on the subject, it shows the different cases where simulation models are used, generates statistics on the most and least used simulation models, benefits, advantages and disadvantages, and finally the conclusions of this literature review are presented.
