This technique makes it possible to maintain adequate oxygenation and circulation while the lungs recover or undergo specific treatments. Although, ECMO is used in emergency situations or in cases where conventional treatments are not enough to sustain the patient's life. Therefore, the objective of this work is to determine, based on scientific evidence, the effects of ECMO extracorporeal membrane oxygenation in patients with acute respiratory distress syndrome ARDS. The methodology used is part of a rapid review of the literature using the PRISMA guide. Scientific studies carried out between 2013 and 2023 in Spanish, English and Portuguese were included. The search was carried out in databases and search engines such as Scielo, LILAC, Scopus, Science Direct and PubMed. The results reveal that ECMO therapy may have advantages in terms of reducing certain complications compared to conventional treatment, and it turned out to be beneficial in patients with ARDS who did not respond to conventional treatment. Conclusion: ECMO therapy is effective in specific cases of severe ARDS and provides an additional treatment option for these patients
