Diversity analysis, distribution and abundance of mosquito (Diptera: Culicidae) assemblages at urban sector from southwestern Colombia
(Springer Science and Business Media Deutschland GmbH, 2025-01-16) Bedoya Rodríguez, Francisco Javier; Guevara Fletcher, Carlos Eduardo; Pelegrin Ramírez, Jonathan Steven
The Culicidae family (mosquitoes) has great relevance worldwide, due to its involvement in generating several diseases. The Department of Cauca in Colombia is characterized as a region with the influence of several vector-borne diseases. This study aims to analyze the ecological diversity and distribution of mosquitoes with potential transmitters of diseases in a particular urban area of the municipality of Santander de Quilichao. This is one of the first studies of its kind in this municipality. Mosquito collections were carried out during the rainy and dry seasons of 2022, between 17:00 to 19:00. Morphological keys were used for species identification. For the analysis of diversity comparison vs. sampling points, Simpson's index was used, a dendrogram, rarefaction curve, and non-metric multidimensional scaling (nMDS). In the statistical analysis of species-abundances, ANOVA was applied to determine if there were significant differences regarding abundance. A total of 1116 culicid specimens were collected. The 59.4% were mosquitoes of the species Aedes aegypti, 18.5% Culex quinquefasciatus, 18.2% Aedes albopictus, and 3.9% Psorophora ferox, being the rainy season important for their survival. ANOVA analysis showed that the mean abundance of Ae. aegypti was significantly different from the other species. This study is broadly consistent with other studies in the tropical American context where the abundance of Culicidae is more representative in the rainy season. The results suggest a wide presence of Aedes mosquitoes in natural and artificial habitats, showing the importance of establishing controls and permanent epidemiological surveillance in this region.

Identification, ecological indices and management of mosquitoes (Diptera: Culicidae) influencing environmental education processes in Colombian high schools
(Springer Science and Business Media Deutschland GmbH, 2022-04) Bedoya Rodríguez, Francisco Javier; Guevara Fletcher, Carlos Eduardo; Vera Lizcano, Omaira
Vector-borne diseases annually cause more than 700,000 deaths worldwide. In Colombia, infectious diseases are prevalent, being the Municipality of Santander de Quilichao (Cauca district) one of the most affected areas. This study aimed (a) to determine the abundance of species of mosquitoes with the potential capacity to transmit infectious diseases, in a school located in the Cauca district and (b) to teach students self-care and care for the environment to protect themselves from vector-borne diseases. During 2019 and 2020, in a dry and rainy season, manual collection of mosquitoes in four sites of the institution was conducted. Ecological statistical analyses were carried out. Mosquito species were grouped by similarity (abundance) using a dendrogram by area and a species rarefaction curve. A sociodemographic survey on knowledge, attitudes, and practices related to vector-borne diseases was carried out. An educational booklet was developed, and its impact was validated through the nonparametric Wilcoxon test. In total, 108 specimens were captured from four species: Aedes aegypti, Aedes albopictus, Culex quinquefasciatus, and Psorophora ferox. The greater presence of mosquitos was during the rainy season, being Aedes aegypti the most abundant species. According to Likert’s analysis, 59.6% of the students had a very favorable attitude toward the subject; the educational campaign significantly improved knowledge, attitudes, and practices of the students. Finally, the study presents entomological data of interest in public health. That makes it possible to establish prevention and control measures for vector-borne diseases in high schools, through environmental education.

Knowledge, Attitudes, and Perceptions of Colombians Towards Biodiversity Regarding COP16
(Multidisciplinary Digital Publishing Institute (MDPI), 2025-02-12) Bedoya Rodríguez, Francisco Javier; Pelegrín, Jonathan S.; Gutiérrez Santana, Aura Cristina; Giraldo Marín, Fredy Alejandro; Gutiérrez Gutiérrez, Alexander; Pinzón Camargo, Libia Carolina; Hurtado Martínez, Jeffrey; Álvarez Martínez, Cindy del Carmen; Perdomo Vergara, Gigliola Yudit; Romero, María Fernanda; Mejía Florez, Ninfa Rosa
Research on Colombians’ knowledge, attitudes, and perceptions (KAP) of biodiversity in the context of COP16 is vital due to Colombia’s significant biodiversity, which comprises about 10% of the world’s total. Understanding public awareness and attitudes towards conservation is essential for effective policy development. This study aims to fill existing research gaps by providing empirical data on how citizens perceive biodiversity and their responsibilities regarding international agreements like COP16. Previous studies have often neglected the impact of significant global events on local populations, making this research particularly relevant. The findings will help policymakers identify misconceptions and areas needing improvement, thereby enhancing conservation initiatives and public engagement. A recent survey revealed that while 80% of Colombians view biodiversity as critical, only a small percentage recognize it as a major global crisis, indicating a disconnect between awareness and action. Many citizens express a willingness to contribute to conservation efforts; however, a significant portion lacks knowledge on how to do so effectively. This study underscores the necessity for educational strategies that are adapted to Colombia’s heterogeneous cultural contexts with the aim of engaging communities. The objective is to galvanize support for biodiversity conservation by enhancing the bond between citizens and their natural heritage.
