Estudio exploratorio sobre el uso de la variabilidad de frecuencia pulsátil (VFP) para identificación del adormecimiento en conductores

For drivers, one of the most frequent causes of road accidents is drowsiness. This is largely due to the unsatisfied need for adequate rest, which causes higher reaction times, reduced vigilance and deficiencies in information processing. In order to contribute to the prevention and/or reduction of accidents, several methods have been implemented to detect drowsiness. However, most of those approaches involve high computational requirements, which, in turn, may increase economic costs. Furthermore, although some approaches offer promising results, very few have been evaluated according to their usability, portability and comfort. In an attempt to address this issue, the present research aimed to develop a device to detect drowsiness in drivers through the pulse rate variability (PRV), which uses as a fundamental basis the photoplethysmographic signal to define the driver's state, since it is a simple, low-cost and non-invasive technique. To determine whether the subject is in drowsiness, time-domain pulse rate variability indexes were computed for 2 hours from ten healthy participants. Most of these indexes showed significant differences and effect sizes (p < 0.05) before and after drowsiness states, and the effect sizes were considerably larger (> 0.8). Based on these results, it could be established that the pulsatile frequency variability method can be used to detect drowsiness and implemented as a possible tool to reduce road risk
