Item Estudio comparativo de higiene oral en estudiantes de odontología de I y X semestre de la Universidad Santiago de Cali en el período académico 2024B(2025) Ordoñez Burbano, Sofía; Valencia Dávila, Karen Pamela; Jiménez Marín, María José; Arana Salas, Diana Andrea (Directora)Introduction: Dentistry is a branch of medicine that focuses on the prevention, diagnosis, and treatment of disorders of the stomatognathic system. Unfortunately, most professionals in training do not put into practice what they have learned throughout their studies. Objective: To compare the level of oral hygiene among dental students from the first and tenth semesters at the University of Santiago de Cali during the 2024 B academic period. Method: Descriptive research, mixed design (qualitative and quantitative data are used), descriptive/explanatory comparative study. For this project, 76 first-semester dental students and 26 tenth-semester students were selected by simple random convenience sampling. A clinical history was taken, collecting basic patient information, emphasizing the patient's medical history, an O'Leary PB index, and an intraoral examination to determine the presence of supragingival calculus. Finally, the results obtained during the research were used to determine the level of oral hygiene in each population. Result: The results allow to establish oral hygiene in students of the Faculty of Dentistry, where students of X semester showed, on average, less plaque accumulation compared to students of I semester, which suggests an improvement in the effectiveness of oral hygiene with the progress in dental training. Conclusion: Epidemiological studies of oral health constitute a basic and essential tool for the proper planning of prevention and dental care programs, as well as for evaluating the degree of adequacy of dental services to the actual needs of the population.Item Impacto de los vaporizadores en la manifestación de alteraciones de la cavidad oral, una revisión bibliográfica(Universidad Santiago de Cali, 2024) Almendra Rivera, Daniela; Hernández Caicedo, Alexandra; Revelo Benavides, Leany Carolina; Arana Salas, Diana Andrea (Directora)The title of this monograph is “Impact of Vaporizers on Periodontal Health, a Literature Review.” The use of vaporizers and electronic cigarettes can have a negative impact on periodontal health, increasing the risk of diseases such as periodontitis. Although some devices claim to be nicotine-free, they have been found to have the substance, raising concerns about its long-term impact on oral health, both for users and people exposed to secondhand vapor. Studies show that the use of these devices can have detrimental effects on periodontal health, underscoring the importance of considering their impact on oral health. The general objective of this monograph is to evaluate the scientific evidence on the impact of vaporizers on periodontal health. The methodology used was a bibliographic search in databases such as PubMed; SciELO; Springer; Scopus; and Google Scholar. As a result, the information obtained from the reviewed studies showed that the use of electronic cigarettes can have negative effects on periodontal health, in particular, individuals who use these devices have a higher risk of developing dental plaque; probing depth; loss of dental attachment; bleeding gums and gingival inflammation. These findings suggest in conclusion that e-cigarette use may contribute to the development of periodontal disease, a condition that can lead to tooth loss.
