Condiciones laborales del sector informal que inciden en el sentido proyectivo de la vida en jóvenes entre los 18 y 24 años en Santiago de Cali
(2025) Acevedo Nieto, Natalia; Valencia Sánchez, Kaherin Nicole; Cruz Mora, Diana Marcela (Directora)
This article analyzes how working conditions in the informal sector impact the life projects of young people aged 18 to 24 in Santiago de Cali. Using a qualitative approach, within the interpretive paradigm and through the phenomenological method, experiences and perceptions of 10 young individuals were collected through semi-structured interviews, nonparticipant observation, and document review. The findings reveal that although informal work offers income and autonomy for many youth, it also hinders their personal, educational, and professional development due to a lack of stability, labor rights, and social security. Factors such as low educational attainment, heavy family financial burdens, and limited participation of women due to gender roles exacerbate this situation. Moreover, the study identified limited awareness of youth employment public policies and a widespread perception of the state's inefficacy in implementing them. The research highlights the need to strengthen employability policies from a territorial, inclusive, and youth-participatory perspective, aligned with Sustainable Development Goal (SDG) 8. It concludes that informality should not be addressed solely from an economic standpoint but as a multidimensional phenomenon that affects the full exercise of youth citizenship, and that social work can play a key role in addressing this issue. This study provides essential insights for designing strategies better suited to the realities of this vulnerable population.
